Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 31, 2026

In short: scanclar processes photos of your documents only to generate your summary. We do not sell your data, and your documents are not used for training.

1. Who we are

scanclar ("we", "us") provides a mobile application that helps you understand official letters and documents by scanning them and generating a plain-language summary. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

2. Information we collect

  • Document photos. When you scan a letter, the photo(s) are sent to our backend and to our processing partner (Anthropic) solely to generate your summary.
  • Account & subscription status. If you subscribe to Plus or Premium, the App Store or Google Play processes your payment and shares your subscription status with us so we can unlock the correct features. We do not receive your payment card details.
  • Basic usage data. We may collect limited technical information (e.g. app version, device type, crash logs) to keep the app working reliably.
  • Contact information you provide. If you email us for support, we keep that correspondence to respond to you.

3. How we use your information

  • To generate the summary, key points, and glossary for the document you scanned.
  • To enforce your plan's scan limits and available features (Free / Plus / Premium).
  • To diagnose bugs and improve the app's reliability.
  • To respond to support requests.

4. What we do not do

  • We do not use your document photos for training.
  • We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
  • We do not require an account to use the free tier.

5. Third parties we share data with

To provide the service, document images are processed by our technology partner, Anthropic, under a data-processing arrangement that prohibits using your content to train their models. Our backend infrastructure is hosted by Render. Payments are processed by Apple's App Store or Google Play, not by us directly.

6. Data retention

Document photos are used to generate your summary and are not retained on our servers longer than needed to complete that request. Your scan history (summaries, not necessarily the original photos) may be stored locally on your device so you can revisit past scans.

7. Your privacy rights under US state law

scanclar is used across the United States, and by 2026 more than twenty states have their own comprehensive consumer privacy laws - including California (CCPA/CPRA), Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Oregon, Texas, and many others. These laws differ in their exact thresholds and wording, but most give you rights along these lines:

  • Right to know / access. You can ask what personal information we hold about you.
  • Right to correct. You can ask us to fix inaccurate personal information.
  • Right to delete. You can ask us to delete personal information we hold about you.
  • Right to data portability. You can ask for a copy of your personal information in a portable format.
  • Right to opt out of the sale of personal information, targeted advertising, and profiling used for decisions with legal or similarly significant effects. scanclar does not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of on this front today - we're stating this so you don't have to ask.
  • Right to non-discrimination. We will not deny you service, charge you a different price, or provide a different level of quality because you exercised any of these rights.
  • Right to appeal. If we decline a request, several state laws (e.g. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut) give you the right to appeal that decision. To appeal, reply to our response with "Appeal" in the subject line and we will review it.

Regardless of which state you live in, you can exercise any of these rights by emailing us at the address below. We will verify your request and respond within the time required by applicable law (typically 45 days, with a possible extension).

Some of these state laws only apply to businesses that meet certain size or revenue thresholds. As a matter of practice, we intend to honor these rights for all users regardless of whether a specific threshold technically applies to us.

8. Notice for users in the European Economic Area, UK, and Switzerland

If we operate scanclar from within the EU/EEA or the UK, EU/UK data protection law (GDPR / UK GDPR) may apply to our processing of your personal information as the controller, even if you are located in the United States. Where GDPR/UK GDPR applies to us, you additionally have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to processing of your personal information, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Contact us at the email below to exercise any of these rights.

9. Children's privacy

scanclar is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in states/laws that use that threshold), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under those ages.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time - for example, as new state privacy laws take effect. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
